Nunc Coepi "Now I Begin"

Sep 30, 2021

I first heard these words in an interview with quarterback Phillip Rivers. It is a Greek phrase that means “now I begin.”

So many times, we hesitate to step out of our comfort zone because of fears and insecurities. We tend to look to our past for confirmation that we can be successful. Sometimes, we do see where we had success, but most of the time all we find is evidence of all the times we tried and failed. In our minds, all of those failures convince us that our only option is failure. It is difficult to see anything different now or in the future.

The words Nunc Coepi give us another option. What if we just begin again right now?

What if we look to the future and see what is possible not what we think is impossible. We are all stronger, smarter and more capable than we give ourselves credit for.

Here is what happens.

We decide to pursue a dream or a goal. We feel motivated and encouraged about the outcome. We have this slight belief that we can accomplish what we desire, but then our brain does what it is designed to do…..protect us from danger, be efficient and help us to seek pleasure.

Immediately our brain begins to push us back into our comfort zone where it is safe. Our brain encourages us to avoid discomfort at all cost…skip the workout, avoid the phone call, don’t be vulnerable in your marriage, stop trying to mend the relationship, etc.

Our brain pushes us to seek pleasure instead…sleep a little longer, eat the cookie, watch one more show on Netflix, shop on Amazon, or scroll on social media.

Our beautiful brilliant brain can work against us if we aren’t careful.

Luckily, the solution is simple. We need to be aware of our thoughts and emotions. This awareness will give us an insight into our brain. This insight will allow us to get rid of old crummy thoughts and direct us to create new thoughts. The new thoughts will help us move forward to reach our goals and dreams.

There are so MANY new thoughts available to us! It doesn't matter what has happened in the past.

As a Catholic Life Coach, I help my clients uncover the possibilities in their life.  Sometimes, they just need to be encouraged to stop looking at the past and to move forward. I offer them tools that they can use on a daily basis to ensure that their thoughts are creating the results they desire.

Are you tired of struggling in your marriage? Do you want to step out of your comfort zone to see what’s possible?

Does it feel like the end of the school year rather than the beginning? Do you want to see how you can make this the BEST school year ever no matter what is going on?
